Chemistry Club debuts in Homecoming Parade

October 18, 2013 by Brittany Sanchez

The Chemistry Club will be giving the crowd their dose of “caffeine” in this year’s Homecoming Parade. This is the first time since 2010 that they will have a float in the Homecoming Parade.

David Sanderson, Chemistry Club treasurer, says the officer team wanted to extend the Homecoming celebration by participating in the Homecoming Parade this year.

The theme for the float is “caffeine.”

Colter Asbill, Chemistry Club event coordinator and intramural director, said they were inspired by the idea that science majors often get little sleep.

They are steering away from the typical parade theme to creatively demonstrate their talents and skills.

“We’ll be doing what we do best,” Asbill said.

The Chemistry Club hopes to create a caffeine molecule for the homecoming float. Asbill said the details are still being worked out. They also plan to have lab benches on the float and Chemistry Club members performing experiments along the way.

“You can expect to see students wearing lab coats and carrying scientific props,” Sanderson said.

They will also have their 27th annual Homecoming Chemistry Circus this year. This has been a long-standing Homecoming tradition for the Chemistry Club.

Sanderson said this is a unique opportunity for science majors to have fun outside the classroom.

The circus will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Walling Lecture Hall. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

The Chemistry Circus will showcase about 10-15 demonstrations that will range from elaborate color changes to fire and explosions. It is something for every age group to enjoy.

Asbill said he is looking forward to getting everyone involved and wants to keep it going. He also hopes to see a good turnout for the Chemistry Circus this year.

The Chemistry Club is not limited to only chemistry majors. Sanderson said it is open to all majors and anyone interested in science is welcome to join.
