One of the most common complaints among students regarding Abilene is that there isn’t anything to do. Students are also limited by lack of money to participate in what is offered. While it’s true that Abilene is a small town, there are plenty of things for students to do if they look for them. So, if you’re looking for a fun way to spend the weekend that will keep the cost low, this is the guide for you.
Start off your Friday night by driving to Buffalo Gap, a small town about 20 minutes outside of Abilene. Buffalo Gap has a cute downtown area and often hosts festivals and historical gatherings.
After exploring the town, drive up to the hills and watch the sunset. Those who think Abilene is ugly have not looked hard enough for beauty, because the view from these hills is truly exceptional.

Depending on how much money you want to spend, Oplin can be a great option for a Friday night activity. Located in a converted fire hall, Oplin hosts dances every Friday night. Entry is only $7 for the entire evening and can be a great way to meet new people.
Abilene has a vibrant art community. One of the best aspects of Abilene’s many galleries is that they are usually free. Gallery hopping is a fun and free way to spend your Saturday afternoon. Be sure to visit The Center for Contemporary Arts, The Grace and The Shore Gallery.
Besides art museums, downtown Abilene also offers a variety of cute shops and restaurants. Finish off the afternoon by wandering through these shops. If you’re hungry, there are some great restaurants to choose from in this area, including Abi Haus and The Beehive. If you’re not looking to spend money, make a picnic lunch and eat at Nelson Park. This park has several play structures, a lake and is located right next to the zoo.
Saturday night is a great time to relax and unwind with a movie. Abilene has a drive-in and a dollar theater, both of which are cheaper options than going to the movies. Also, Box Office video is located conveniently close to campus and is inexpensive. There are also movies available from dorms.
End your weekend with some exercise by hiking the Fort Phantom trail or lounging by the lake. Or, enjoy your last moments of relaxation by studying at Mezamiz or the library.
However you decide to spend your weekend, don’t use Abilene as an excuse for your boredom. These are just a few options for relatively cheap activities in the area. There are plenty more if you take the time to search.
