Student Activities changes float requirements

October 9, 2014 by Jonathan Ward

The Office of Student Activities and Productions has extended the number of hours pledges can work on Homecoming floats and removed limits on club spending for floats.

Club floats will be featured in ACU’s annual Homecoming Parade with the theme “There’s No Place Like Home.” Student Activities is coordinating the club portion of this year’s floats while the ACU Alumni Association organizes the rest of the parade floats.

“With the shortened length of pledging, we’re allowing clubs to be more creative with what they do for their floats,” said Tom Craig, director of student activities and productions.

Craig also said floats will not necessarily be measured for size this year, but he expects club members to adhere to safety rules.

“Basic rules of safety and traffic must be followed,” he said. “For example, the float has to fit under power lines and traffic lights, and when the float turns, it must be able to turn without tipping over.”

Members can have as much product donated as needed to build their floats. Student Activities has not placed any strict guidelines on receipts, so clubs can govern their own spending and use the extra spending freedom to enhance their float’s presentations.

“We’re hoping for floats that are more dynamic and exciting than what we’ve seen in the past,” Craig said.

For the clubs’ annual float competition, the winning clubs will now receive $1,000 of prize money to donate to a charity of their choice. As usual, the competition will have a men’s category and a women’s category.

Kayli Denson, sophomore advertising and public relations major from Abilene, is confident Ko Jo Kai, the oldest club on campus, will take first place in the women’s competition as they did last year. Denson is in charge of constructing this year’s Ko Jo Kai float.

“My experience has helped me become extremely involved and I’ve connected with my NuNu sisters in a fun environment while working on our float activities,” Denson said. “My hardworking girls have put a lot of effort into the float. We are determined to protect out first place title.”

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
