Diets are for quitters

February 27, 2015 by Rachel Fritz

After this semester, I will never look at food the same way again.

As an elective, I decided to take a nutrition class that ties in social injustice. So far, though, it’s turned out to be a class that makes me regret ever eating anything. Ever.

OK, maybe I’m exaggerating, but only a little.

I’ve learned about vegan diets, plant-based diets, banana diets and I even learned what ketosis is. But, the only thing I’ve taken away from it is that my whole life has been a lie.

The government has made us believe we’re supposed to follow the food pyramid and eat lots of grains and meat along with some vegetables and fruits. Oh, and don’t forget the dairy.

What’s worse is that the government has made us believe processed foods and foods you buy in a box are actually healthy for you. Take the time to read what’s in that stuff; chances are, you won’t be able to pronounce half of it, and if you can’t pronounce it, what makes you think it’s safe to eat?

I’ve always thought about going on a diet or something to improve my eating habits, but I just can’t bring myself to do it, because diets are for quitters, and I’m not a quitter. And, I’m super cheap and don’t want to spend more money on food than I already do. I’m sure some of you can relate.

But, I’ve found that this is the wrong way to go about looking at things. If I think of it as more a lifestyle that can increase my longevity than a diet that’ll only benefit me temporarily, I have no excuse to not go all out. Sure, I’ll have to trade in my 25 cent Ramen for 98 cent sweet potatoes, but I think I can spare the extra three quarters for better health. I’d say the sacrifice is well worth with it.

I’ve slowly started giving up snacks and processed foods, but I just can’t give up the bread. Nobody’s perfect, right? But I will admit, I do feel better about what I’m putting into my body, and I feel better physically.

And to think, all it took was a class to scare me into changing my “lifestyle.”

Now, if you’re wondering what you are really supposed to eat, well”¦ I’ll let you know when I find out. But so far, if it grew out the ground, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to eat.
