Looking to improve their conference record, the softball team will travel to San Antonio to face off against the University of Incarnate Word in yet another three game series. The Church of Christ and Catholic affiliated universities will play over Easter weekend.
The Wildcats are coming off of a series loss against McNeese State, in which the team avoided a sweep with a game two win. With that win, they handed McNeese their first conference loss of the season.
Freshman infielder Peyton Hedrick had another outstanding series that included two home runs and an improved batting average of .452, second best in the conference.
Sophomore outfielder Taylor Brown also had good games throughout the series, assisting in the win against McNeese.
Junior pitcher Julia Montoya had one of her best outings for the ‘Cats, recording a complete game win. She gave up two runs on four hits with only one walk and moved to 3-5 on the season. Head coach Bobby Reeves will switch between Montoya and senior Emily Seidel. Seidel has pitched 120 innings this season and has 74 strikeouts.
Incarnate Word comes into this weekend’s games without a win in conference play, going 0-12 and 4-28 overall as the cellar of the Southland.
The Cardinals are coming off of a 1-0 loss against Texas State University. Though the game was low scoring, UIW managed to keep the Bobcats offense to a minimum. Look for that to be apart of the Cardinals gam plan going into the three game series.
Freshman pitcher for the Cards, Sarah Leal, will be one of the key factors if UIW wants to come out with a win. She’s batting a .500 this season and has 7 home runs. Teammate, Kristin Hebert has 15 home runs on the season and will be looking to add more this weekend.
Throughout the season, the Wildcats have made it known their game is a combination of simply executing in all aspects of the game. If they can get into a rhythm and synch those three factors together, ACU could easily see a big improvement in their conference record.
First pitch for the Wildcats and the Cardinals is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, but weather may change it to 1 p.m. with the second game of the double-header to start immediately after. Saturday’s final game of the series is set for 3 p.m.
