Women’s tennis defeat Corpus Christi in final home match

April 16, 2015 by Hannah Little

The men’s and women’s tennis teams will close out their season at the end of the month, but not before the women take on University of Central Arkansas Saturday.

The women’s team competed in its last home match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday. The Wildcats defeated the Islanders for its third-straight Southland Conference victory, 4-3.

In singles competition, wins came from sophomore Erin Walker, freshman Lucile Pothier and junior Nada Marjanovic. Potheir’s win was her third straight win, and 12th overall, of the spring season, and she is now tied with Walker for second place.

Junior Kaysie Hermsdorf fell short as she went into three sets for her singles match against her opponent, Celia Rodriguez. The scores of the close sets were 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Whitney Williams also went into three sets in her loss against Maider Martin, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, the Wildcats swept the Islanders in all three matches as the last dual with freshman Carli Knezevich and Pothier was left unfinished. Senior Brittney Reed expects to close out her season by giving it all on the court.

“We feel very confident after coming off a couple of big wins,” Reed said. “I want to play with no regrets and have fun.”

The men also wrapped up conference play this past week, as the Wildcats couldn’t get the win Wednesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The men’s team then turned around to play local opponent Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday.

The men’s team fell to Corpus Christi 5-2 as the Wildcats struggled to earn wins in singles. Sophomore Nico Agritelley and junior Marco Bensley contributed the only wins in singles as the matches went into three sets.

In doubles matches, freshman Henry Adams and junior Jason Proctor were caught up in a close battle as the match was left unfinished with the Wildcats trailing 6-5.

Moving forward, both teams will be back to compete in the Ojai Tournament in Ojai, California. The tournament will take place April 23-26.
