Student designs Snapchat banners for Abilene

Students crowded Cypress Street at Wednesday night’s New Kids on the Block party. This GeoTag Filter was one designed by ACU student Reilly Cox, senior graphic design major from Austin.

GeoTag filters for Snapchat are now available for Abilene, including an Abilene tag and a special Wildcat Week tag.

Reilly Cox, senior graphic design major from Austin, created the new tags after submitting ideas to Snapchat.

“For the Abilene filter, I was feeling like messing around with some hand drawn type instead of using a typeface, because in order to get the design approved, it had to be completely original,” Cox said. “So I wrote it out by hand and then took it into the computer to clean it up and add the gradient that was inspired by the Abilene sky when the sun is setting.”

The Wildcat Week filter went live last Saturday and is only available for use through this Saturday. Though it’s temporary, the tag is something new freshmen can use as part of the improved Wildcat Week.

“I thought it would be an interesting thing to have when so many people are going crazy and snapchatting their experiences during the week,” Cox said.

Snapchat filters are based on geographical location determined by the location services of the phone. They are only available within a certain distance and show up as a banner across the photo.

“I didn’t know that Abilene had some of those, so that’s pretty cool,” said Crysta Cook, junior history education major from Abilene. “I feel like Abilene is trying to be cool because Dallas and all of those cities have really awesome Snapchat tags, and we’re still trying to make a name for ourselves as far as being a big city. I think it’s pretty cool that we have those tags now.”

Cox said Snapchat makes it easy for anyone to submit designs for filters.

“I thought it would be an interesting experience and I had nothing to lose,” Cox said. “All the details are laid out on the website, such as the size and limitations, so if you know how to use Adobe Illustrator, literally anyone could do it.”

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
