Art students prepare for senior art show

January 28, 2016 by Mercedez Hernandez

Four art students will showcase their work at The Fine Print senior art show at 6 p.m. Friday at the ACU Cockerell Art Gallery.

Chera Chaney, Lauren Payne, Chandler Taylor and Jennie Magner will showcase about 40 combined works at the show.

A senior art show is a requirement for all art and design majors, and this group of seniors will be the first to show off their works this semester.

“We got the first show, which is a good thing because you get it over with, but it is stressful jumping into it right after Christmas break,” said Chera Chaney, a senior, graphic design major from Merkel.

Lauren Payne, a senior graphic design major from Lubbock, says the experience of planning the show has been surreal for her.

“This is something that every art and design student is required to do, so our freshman year we were seeing senior shows and now it’s like oh goodness this is our turn. We’re about to graduate,” Payne said.

The show will feature a variety of works including sculptures, abstract and surrealist paintings, graphic design prints and even a rebranding of Sharky’s Burrito Company. Although there will be many pieces at the show, Chaney and Payne have some pieces that have more significance to them.

“I don’t have one favorite, because it kind of changes but I love all of my paintings,” Chaney said. “I’m just really proud of them because each painting took about 25-30 hours total, and once you’re done with one it feels like such a prized possession.”

Payne said her favorite work was her redesign of the book cover for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

“I worked really hard on that piece,” Payne said. “I honestly have been working on this project for about a year and a half, and I’m excited to finally put the finished product out there and have everyone see it.”

Although Chaney and Payne won’t be graduating until May, both artists said Friday’s show is part of their final goodbye to the university.

“The show feels like a closure on your college career,” Chaney said. “You work hard for four years and now you get to show all of that hard work to your friends and family.”
