Malcolm, played by Shameik Moore, is a classic high school geek; he goes to class, gets good grades and has zero experience with the ladies. Despite this, he has two ride or die friends in the just-as-geeky Job and Diggy. The trio bond over their shared love for 90s hip-hop culture although they spend quite a bit of time playing in their own punk band.
It is the trio’s senior year and the Harvard-dreaming Malcolm wants to shed his image of being a nerdy 90s kid. He gets that opportunity by doing a simple favor for Dom, a street drug dealer, and gets into the hottest party of the year. However, at the party chaos breaks out and the events that conspired that night set in motion the dangerous predicament that place Malcolm and his friends at a very important crossroad.
This film blends together the beauty of today’s cinematography with cool characters and 90s nostalgia. Rapper A$AP Rocky is even thrown into the mix for an added element of cool. Dope is exactly as the title suggests and will be the coolest coming of age story about a nerd that you’ll see this year.
