Wildcat tennis combines in Abilene to play Midwestern State

April 13, 2016 by Max Preston

Both the men and women’s tennis team will be playing in Abilene Wednesday against the Div. II Midwestern State University. This will be the first non-conference match for the women in a little over a month while the men faced the University of Texas-San Antonio under two weeks ago.

This will also conclude home matches for the five seniors: Jason Proctor, Brandon McCarty, Marco Bensley, Nada Marjanovic, and Kaysie Hermsdorf.

The men will come into this match with a 17-8 overall record (.680 pct) and a home record of 4-1. They are coming off of a bye weekend and last played Corpus Christi to cap off a four game road trip in which they split with two wins and two losses.

The men will look to see a different type of competition in their non-conference match Wednesday.

The Midwestern State men will bring in a 12-5 overall record (.706 pct) with an away record of 4-0. They have pulled off many impressive wins against division two opponents including four ranked schools. The Wildcat men will have to be ready to see a tough away team in Midwestern.

“Our team is excited to compete against MSU,” sophomore Henry Adams said. “We feel very prepared and confident as a team. We just came off two very close and toughly sees against formidable conference opponents and motivated to secure a win against this team. We are also looking forward to honoring our seniors as it is their last home match and ending with a win would be a great way for them to finish.”

The women are coming into the match confident after taking second place in the Southland conference. They have an overall record of 18-6 (.750 pct) and an impressive 8-0 home record. They are coming off of a match against Central Arkansas which they won 5-2 to take second in the conference. The women should be confident heading into their match Wednesday and will look to keep dominating.

The Midwestern women will have a 14-5 overall record (.737 pct) and a 7-1 away record going into the match. They have earned multiple impressive victories including wins over ranked division two opponents and also the division one Dallas Baptist that was ranked 47th at the time. The match up will surely be one to watch as two confident teams face off.

“One of the most important things for a team to bring to an upcoming match is confidence,” freshman Jordan Henry said. “We need to be confident in our abilities to play well as a team, and after playing together this season I think we all have that trust and confidence in each other’s abilities. Since this is our last match at home I know it will be important to all of us to play to the best of our abilities and get this win for our seniors who will be graduating soon.”

The matches will both begin here on campus at 5 P.M. tomorrow.
