If you were to look at the back of the floor during Chapel, it would appear Chapel attendance has outgrown the more than 5,000 seats Moody Coliseum has to offer. More than 50 people, both students and faculty, during a normal Chapel service will congregate near the rear exits. One problem: plenty of seats are available. With about 75 people ... [Read More…]
Safety whistles, programs useful tools
I'm writing in response to the news article about our annual safety whistle presentation which was printed in the Wednesday, Oct. 1 Optimist edition. I can appreciate fair and unbiased coverage, even when the "fairness" may reflect in a negative way upon me or my department. What I don't appreciate is an article that seems to go out of its way ... Angry liberals have baseless claims
Jason Mida's letter last week exemplifies angry liberalism at its best. When cornered or held accountable to facts, liberals just get louder and more ferocious. Jason Mida has found himself in the shadow of such radical Democratic Party icons as Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean and the always obnoxious Al Franken. How can somebody claim Democrats ... [Read More…]
SA leaves student money in the lurch
Wednesday night allowed us to realize what little interest Congress apparently has in properly using the student body's money. In the fashion of a fine bureaucracy, the students' governing body created a committee that nearly everyone deemed necessary to investigate budgetary inconsistencies but left that committee with no members, no time frame ... TVs will disturb peace
By Kyle Peveto, Page Editor Column Schmolumn Last semester, while I heard each Students' Association presidential candidate proclaim a platform, almost everyone mentioned to us the goal of placing televisions around campus that would be plugged into SATV and a national news service that would supply us with up-to-the-minute news and weather. I ... [Read More…]
Davis’ negligence in California angers students
Weck's World Outsiders like me might laugh at Texans because of their big-haired governor or their senators who take extended vacations in Albuquerque, but what if you hailed from California? More than 100 ACU students do, and Calif. Gov. Gray Davis' insane laws and policies have affected their lives in disastrous ways, prompting some, if not ... [Read More…]
West Nile should not infect with fear
On Aug. 15 an 84-year-old man from Merkel died from the West Nile virus. Investigators confirmed his death as the first in Taylor County in 2003, and just last week medical officials announced results that showed a Taylor County woman is recovering from the disease. However, this should not create fear or panic because the threat of the virus is ... [Read More…]
Fulks’ life worthy of hero status
Finding heroes at ACU isn't hard. But for those on the lookout, Dr. Lewis Fulks would make a good one. Fulks died Sept. 19 at Hendrick Medical Center at the age of 77. He taught theatre for 44 years - 30 of those while leading the theatre program. More than 500,000 people saw his shows, from the Wizard of Oz, to his final production, Man of La ... [Read More…]
Alumnus thanks students, staff
On Sept. 4, I was visiting ACU. That afternoon I was in the library there on campus; I was on the third floor. About 4:30 I began to have chest pains and started to sweat rather profusely. Some students and library personnel noticed that something was wrong. In a few minutes, an ambulance was called and I was on my way to Hendrick Hospital. I ... [Read More…]
Social clubs build bonds
I was appalled at the article that appeared in the Views Wednesday section of the Optimist about social clubs. First of all, I find it amusing that the person who has these views doesn't even have the courage to sign their name to the article. Secondly, this was obviously written by someone who has never taken part in the social club ... [Read More…]
