Phone problems solved in time for new year: Former issues with voice mail, cordless phones now fixed

August 30, 2002 by Kyle Peveto

Problems plaguing phone lines installed last summer have been fixed, and no major complaints have been made this year.

The new phone system installed in the summer of 2001 initially had some conflicts with cordless phones, keeping some on-campus residents from checking their voice mail.

Those problems were cleared up last year, and no major work orders have been issued.

“We haven’t run into any problems this year,” said Bill Shaw, a telecommunications analyst in Computer and Network Services. “We’ve been able to fix everything that comes.”

The system originally was designed for corded phones and did not recognize the tones created by some brands of cordless phones said Joshua Tooley, an animal science major from Maple and Team 55 employee.

Other problems last year involved some General electric-brand cordless phones that would not ring because the tone it produced was too low and some phones with malfunctioning keypads, which would not dial numbers properly.

When problems arose with voice mail last year, students were told to check voice mail from other phones or buy new phones.

If any new problems arise, students should contact Team 55 for information.
