ACU Classic begins Friday in Moody: Team takes on No. 2 Missouri Western in invitational

The women’s basketball team welcomes three teams to the ACU Classic in Moody Coliseum this weekend.

Lone Star Conference South opponent Texas Woman’s and non-conference teams Incar-nate Word and Missouri Wes-tern will join ACU in the four-team invitational that begins Friday and wraps up Saturday.

Texas Woman’s and Mis-souri Western kick off play 4 p.m. Friday, followed by ACU and Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. On Saturday, IW takes on Texas Woman’s in a precursor to ACU and Western.

Coach Wayne Williams said both Incarnate Word and No. 2 ranked Missouri Western would present a big task for the Wildcats.

“Incarnate is a solid team,” he said. “They bring a lot of size to the floor and they’re gonna be a big challenge for us.

“Missouri Western will be a formidable opponent also,” Williams said. “They’re bringing back three to four solid players.”

Junior center Melanie Carter said the 1-2 Wildcats did a good job of playing a complete game in last Saturday’s 108-46 exhibition beating of the Houston Flames, something they did not do in previous games.

“In our first three games we played about one good half of basketball,” Carter said. “We’d play really strong for a half and then slack off in the end. We’re looking to play two full games this weekend.”

Carter said the team would try to avoid focusing on the caliber of its opponents this weekend.

“That’s been a problem of ours-getting too concerned with how good the other teams are,” she said. “We’re learning to be more concerned with how we’re playing.”

Williams said the starting five, which has fluctuated in the past, will be the same as it was against the Flames.

Carter, sophomore forward Stephanie Riles, senior forward Leah Wilson, freshman guard Ashley King and senior guard Jodi Hellums will be on the floor come tip-off.

“We want to get to know our personnel a bit better and establish some rotations,” Williams said. “Quality depth is always a blessing. There’s a lot of diversity in who we put on the floor.”
