As most Americans are, I was brought up believing that this nation I live in is better than all other areas of the world. Yet we sadly struggle with immense pride in our nation, even when we should put that aside and focus on our greater citizenship in God’s Kingdom. Year after year we have a parade of flags, a wonderful opportunity to let God tear down our man-made boundaries.
Instead, we go through each state in alphabetical order while we applaud solemnly. Texas, of course, is noticeably absent during this time of alphabetical acceptance. Once all the suburbs have moved out of the way of our mighty state, Texas can take center stage with a huge production and a loud roar from the crowd.
Next comes something even more troubling.
Later, we drop the canopy that is the United States flag from the ceiling to a roar from the crowd. Congratulations everybody, you’ve made it to America! Oh, and kudos on being part of God’s kingdom as well.
I cannot help but think of the love chapter: 1 Corinthians 13. Love is kind, does not boast and is not proud.
I look forward to the day when we will all come together for the first time to worship our God as one body in heaven, as we welcome people from across the world to proudly join us in that place-or do you suppose Peter and John will run by waving a humongous Israeli flag?
