Dr. Michael Sadler, professor of physics, will leave for Russia Sept. 7 to do research on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Sadler will be working in Gatchina, Russia, at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute with people he has worked with in the past.
“We have collaborated for some time about projects from the Brookhaven National Laboratory,” Sadler said.
The scholarship is for five months. Sadler could only spend two months in Russia in the spring, because he was delayed going due to health concerns of his wife. He will be in Russia until Oct. 11 and is planning on going back one more time this fall.
Sadler will be doing research on the particles that make up atoms, called quarks. They will be colliding the particles to see how they react and to see what more can be learned about them.
“It’s basically like a two-year-old that bangs things together to try to break them open to see what’s inside,” Sadler said.
The Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which gives out the scholarships, offers 800 traditional Fulbright scholarships a year to scholars who either lecture or do research.
Sadler is looking forward to the chance to work with the Russian physicists again.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity,” Sadler said. “It’s helped me have insight to my Russian collaborators.”
