Lori’s Story: Good burgers worth a sacrifice

Grille Works is the name, and burgers might bring it fame.

Students were surprised to return from summer break and find they no longer could order cheese sticks, chicken fried steak or quesadillas from the Bean Sprout.

Instead, Aramark has introduced a new concept called Grille Works, and the menu now offers a choice of nine different hamburgers or cheeseburgers, chicken strips and a few sandwiches.

I was angry at first to see that the variety of on-campus food had dwindled. But then I ordered a hamburger. Instead of the tasteless, undercooked Sprout burger of last year, this burger had flavor. The cooks use Montreal Steak Seasoning on them, and the patties are made as you order.

Supervisor Lex Hunt, junior biblical text major from Auburn, Ala., said the Sprout is trying to imitate a trend set by restaurants that offer a more focused and perfected menu. I like this concept.

Andre Allen, director of retail for the Bean Sprout, said he is trying to find a niche for the eatery – the best burgers in town. I agree that they are already more tasty than the pre-made patties at McDonald’s and Burger King.

Andre also said that later in the year he probably will add different entrees, like catfish or barbecue, but his staff will focus on achieving best-burger-in-Abilene status for now.

Most students I talked to agreed that the burgers’ taste has improved since previous years, but they still think Aramark could emphasize service more to help popularize the Sprout.

I’m glad Allen and his staff are working to improve the Bean Sprout and are trying to implement change for our palates. Now I can finally have an appetizing burger and fries without the hassle of leaving campus.
