A small group of athletes traveled to Norman, Okla., to compete in the Sooner Indoor Invitational Saturday. After Saturday’s meet, Wildcat athletes have only one left-next weekend’s Clemson Classic in Clemson, S.C.-to qualify for the Division II Indoor National Championships.
Liga Klavina was the only automatic qualifier for ACU, placing second in the women’s shot put with a throw of 49-10. Klavina’s throw ranks No. 2 in school history for the women’s shot put. In the same event, Amy Williams joined the list of provisional qualifiers with a throw of 44-4 1/4. Freshman Stephanie Warren improved her provisional mark in the high jump with a winning leap of 5-8 3/4, the No. 2 mark in Division II this year.
After breaking the Division II pole vault record of 13-2 1/2 at the Tyson Foods Indoor Invitational last weekend, junior Katie Eckley cleared 12-9 1/2 Saturday to place second. Teammate Val Gorter was fourth in the event with a vault of 12-3 1/2. Unattached vaulter Erica Bartalina won the event with a facility record vault of 14 feet.
On the men’s side, Marvin Bien-Aime placed sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.89. In the men’s mile, senior Nick Branen placed fourth in 4:23.30. Branen also won the men’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:57.83. Finally, freshman Stephon Greenlee barely missed qualifying provisionally qualifying in the 60-meter hurdles, but managed to place fourth with a time of 8.22.
Twenty-five athletes or relay teams have qualified provisionally or automatically for the national meet. Four men and the 4×400-relay squad have automatically qualified, as well as two women.
