The Olympics have ended, so some ardent fans now may find they have hours of free time with nothing to do. Several activities are starting on campus, and a lot of them mirror Olympic events, so here are some of the top things to do now that the games of the 28th Olympiad have concluded.
* Volleyball season started last weekend, and the team’s next home game is Tuesday against Lubbock Christian University. The spark and the drive of Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Misty May and Kerri Walsh can be seen in these women, who were ranked 28th in the nation in one preseason poll.
* This year’s Freshman Follies theme is “The A.C. Nothing’s Cooler,” and the production is kind of like a synchronized pentathlon, with five performances slated for Sept. 24-25. With Kendall Massey, a still-new director with a year of experience under him, this probably will be one of the cooler shows on campus this year.
* The Students’ Association meets each Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Biblical Studies Building Room 114. The first meeting is this week, and it’s a great time to hear what the Student Congress is working on and what issues the group is dealing with. Debates don’t escalate to the intensity of Greco-Roman wrestling matches, but some get close.
* Rushes start next week, so if you’re a fan of social clubs, now’s the time to start planning how best to get into the group you want. If you’re not a fan, now’s the time to start plotting the best way to avoid the swarming crowds of multicolor-skirted women or brick-carrying men. Students will complete this pledging marathon in October around Homecoming.
* The deadline for FilmFest entry forms is next week, so teams should be forming and planning now. Organizers of the competition want it to join the ranks of such traditions as Follies and Sing Song, and anyone with ties to the university in the past 12 months can enter, which means students could be competing against their teachers. The contest will probably become intense, but instead of medals, winners will receive cool prize packages.
* The Recreation Area has a new addition: automatic bowling scoring. For a fun Friday night, students can get a group of friends together, divide into teams and organize their own Olympic-like games, with prizes of their choosing. The area also has pool tables, arcade games and an Xbox center.
The Olympics are a far stretch for most of us who could never dream of jumping, diving or sprinting our way to a medal. But, by being creative and getting involved in ACU activities, becoming champions on campus is within our reach.
