Players to form ‘Ultimate Frisbee’ club

October 13, 2006 by Denton Josey

Already a popular sport on campus, ultimate Frisbee may also be the basis of a new club.

Todd Piersall, junior photojournalism major from Keller, is communicating with university officials about starting the official Ultimate Frisbee Club at ACU.

“We’re trying to get a club together because ultimate Frisbee seems to be a pretty popular sport on campus,” Piersall said.

Piersall played the sport in high school and was disappointed when he arrived at ACU and found out there was no team. Several of his friends from high school are playing on teams at other universities, so Piersall said it was always in the back of his mind to start a team at ACU.

Though the club hasn’t become official, Piersall seems to have the details worked out. He plans to be the president, while the other positions are to be filled by other ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts.

Nathan McKenzie, junior political science major from Albuquerque, N.M., talked with the Students’ Association about official ACU recognition.

Piersall and McKenzie are spreading the word about the club and finalizing the process to be an officially recognized club on campus. McKenzie said registering with the school legitimizes it and in a sense says the school endorses it. Planners hope to have the club approved by November.

Kristin Wood, junior English major from Bakersfield, Calif., said she doesn’t even play, but Piersall asked her to be secretary. So far, Wood said her job has been to find out more about the rules and how to register for tournaments.

The group had its first interest meeting two weeks ago. Leaders are discussing how to get to tournaments and how much dues should be for everything to work.

Piersall said there is a group on campus that plays on Sunday nights at 8 p.m., and many freshmen play at various times also.

“There’s a lot of people who play here so I think it will be pretty popular,” Wood said.

The official governing body for the sport is the Ultimate Players Association, which coordinates many tournaments.

“Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest-growing sports in colleges across the nation and it just doesn’t seem right that ACU isn’t a part of this growing trend,” McKenzie said. “We feel like students should have the opportunity to compete and participate in this.”
