Women hit road after victory

February 1, 2008 by Michael Freeman

By Michael Freeman, Assistant Sports Editor

After coming off a conquering win over Tarleton State on Tuesday, the Wildcat women’s basketball team will look to put together a winning streak on the road Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

ACU has a 9-9 overall record and a 3-2 record in the Lone Star Conference South Division. Texas A&M-Kingsville is 5-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

“We have been playing better, just not consistently,” said head coach Shawna Lavender.

ACU’s last loss was Saturday against Midwestern State when the Wildcats dropped an 85-63 decision on the road. The Wildcats have not won on Midwestern State’s home court since Feb. 7, 1998. Even though the loss was deflating, ACU was able to come back to beat Tarleton State.

“I think it shows the character of our team,” Lavender said. “It shows they still have a lot of fight in them, and that’s always exciting for a coach to see.”

On Tuesday, the Wildcats easily downed Tarleton State by the score of 75-58 in Moody Coliseum. It was Tarleton State’s worst loss since Jan. 10 when they fell 59-42 to Southeastern Oklahoma State.

“I’m hoping that we can use the win to continue on to Kingsville,” said forward Kristee Davidson. “Hopefully, this will be the confidence boost that we need.”

Next up for the Wildcats is Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas rank No. 5 in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage and No. 9 in offensive rebounds.

“They’re a different team than what we’ve played all year,” Lavender said.

The Javelinas play a zone strategy offense – an offense that ACU rarely sees. However, that offense has only given Texas A&MKingsville an average 64.8 points per game, while ACU averages 73.6.

“I think the key for us is being patient and not letting them take us out of our game,” Lavender said. “I think if we do that and also keep them off the boards because they do a great job on offensive boards. Those two things will be key for us.”
