Ad kiosk coming to Campus

February 4, 2009 by Sondra Rodriguez

In response to the new ACU policy that prohibits fliers and sidewalk chalk announcements on campus, Student Life and Physical Resources are planning to build an information kiosk near the west entrance of the Campus Center in the upcoming weeks.

Mauri Westbrook, director of Student Organizations and Activities, said the kiosk, which is the first of several that will be installed on campus, is intended to benefit and serve students regarding campus communication and announcements.

“Students will be able to come to a central location to post and view fliers regarding different events or activities,” Westbrook said. “It will have all the benefits fliers have always had on our campus, with the added benefit of having them in a centralized location.”

Mary Reyes, employee in the Executive Vice President’s Office, described the layout of the kiosk.

“It will have four flat walls where students will be able to post what they used to post on the sidewalk and windows of the Campus Center,” she said. “And one side will be a campus map.”

This kiosk will serve as a trial kiosk.

“We’ll see how effectively it will be used,” Reyes said.

Westbrook said after the first kiosk is built, Student Life will seek feedback from students to determine if a need exists for more on campus. Because students were banned from posting fliers on campus last fall, this will allow students to post fliers in a way that keeps the campus looking beautiful, Westbrook said.

“I think students will be excited to see a structure on campus that is dedicated to their needs,” she said. “I think they will love having all the information they need in one place that is readily accessible.”

The kiosk(s) will be built by the Physical Resources team, and are to be funded by existing department budgets. Westbrook said she is excited about the use of a kiosk on campus.

“We have some exciting new electronic forms of communication,” she said. “But having a place that students can post traditional fliers is going to help us be more comprehensive in our approach to communicating with students efficiently and effectively.”

Students interested in utilizing the first kiosk must have fliers stamped at the information desk in the Campus Center or in the Student Life office located at the west entrance of McKinzie Hall.

The complete policy regarding student communication is located at www.acu.edu/campusoffices/studentlife/announce. Students should expect to see construction for the kiosk between the Brown Library and the Campus Center in the next few weeks.
