Solo home run propels Cats: ACU wins season opener 4-3 over Rollins College

Starting pitcher Jacque Gregoire pitched a complete game and outfielder Shelby McElvain hit a solo home run to give the Wildcats a come-from-behind win Thursday night over Rollins College.

The Wildcats (1-0) fell behind early after Rollins College scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, capped by a two-run home run by Jamie Rausch. But after the first inning, Gregoire gave up just five hits and no walks while striking out eight over the final six innings to earn her first win of the season.

ACU tied the game in the top of the fifth inning after outfielder Brooke Whittlesey hit an RBI double and then scored on a wild pitch. First baseman Katie Cornelison tied the game at three after hitting a sacrifice fly that scored outfielder Caitlin Nabors.

In the top of the sixth, McElvain hit a one-out home run to give the Wildcats the lead. Rollins College put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Gregoire forced a pop out to give the Wildcats the win.

ACU continues play in the St. Mary’s Invitational Friday against Texas A&M-International at 11:15 a.m. and Washburn at 3:45.
