With the end of the school year approaching, many students are struggling to meet the university’s required Chapel attendance.
Students are required to attend 55 of 73 regularly scheduled Chapel programs. This past semester, students who were 10 or more credits shy of the requirements were given two options. They were allowed either to attach the remaining credits to their total for the next semester or be put on Chapel probation. If a student chose to be put on probation, they would not be allowed to participate in any social club activities, intramural sports or award ceremonies, said Kathy Hogan, administrative coordinator of Chapel programs.
At the beginning of each semester, students can apply for Chapel exemptions for several reasons, including employment conflicts, medical conditions or volunteer activities such as Meals on Wheels. Students who meet any of these requirements can earn prorated Chapel credits.
Along with the daily Chapel programs, Chapel forums and the end-of-semester survey are two more ways for students to gain their required credits. The year’s last forum was Tuesday, but students still have a chance to gain two extra credits with the Chapel survey. Hogan says the surveys have been helpful for the Chapel office and for students.
“The survey is a good way for these students who need one or two credits at the end of the year,” Hogan said. “It has also been a good way for us to get feedback on what we need to improve on.”
When filling out the Chapel survey, Hogan says students need to properly input their Banner ID number to gain credit.
Kendrick Johnson, senior exercise science major from Morton, is one of many students struggling to get the required credits. Johnson said the forums and Chapel survey have been two of the main ways for him to make the requirements.
