The men’s track and field team finished with two automatic qualifiers and two provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Division II national meet. The women’s team also had two automatic qualifiers and two provisional qualifiers.
“The pressure has begun for the NCAA Championships,” Roosevelt Lofton, track and field head coach, said.
Desmond Jackson automatically qualified for the national meet in the 100-meter relay, posting a time of 10.34 seconds. Jackson won the event, and his time qualified as second fastest in the nation for Division II.
Tyler Fleet also automatically qualified for the national meet with his performance in the hammer throw. Fleet recorded a throw of 189 feet, 11 inches.
Amos Sang and Ramon Sparks earned a provisional qualification for their performances. Sang won the 5,000 with a time of 14:39.54.
Sparks provisionally qualified in the long jump recording a 24-5 mark in the event. Sparks also won the triple jump with a 51-1.5 mark.
The women’s team had four qualify for the national meet as well, including Amanda Clemons and Destinee Nixon in the triple jump. Clemons won the event with a 40-7, and Nixon was close behind her teammate with a 40-6.
Two others provisionally qualified in the hammer throw. Jessica Sloss and Paige Newby posted marks of 177-1 and 169-7 respectively.
The women’s team won the 400-meter relay, finishing with a time of 46.22. Linda Brivule also took first in the javelin at 167-7.
Anais Belledant won the 1,500 with a time of 4:34.09, while Kim Prather won the 400 with a time of 55.09.
The Wildcats will conclude the season next weekend. The Conference meet will be May 7-9 in San Angelo, and the NCAA Division II meet will be May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C.
