Need an eco-friendly way to re-style your old T-shirts? ACU Environmental Society will host “Re-purpose Your Style” in the Campus Center Living Room from 3-6 p.m. Nov. 16.
Samantha Futrell, environmental science major from San Angelo and president of ACU Environmental Society, said the event is an exciting, creative opportunity.
“We were actually inspired by the ‘Style Your Sole’ event,” Futrell said. “There will be markers, paints, patches and cut-up designs for decorating.”
Students can also learn how to make reusable grocery bags, scarves, handbags and laptop cases with their shirts. Admission is $2, and proceeds will go toward the supplies and the ACU campus recycling initiative. Participants must bring their own T-shirts to the event. ACU Environmental Society will donate any extra shirts to Goodwill stores.
Futrell said this event is a great way to educate people about recycling. Other schools, such as Texas A&M University, have successfully hosted events that promote recycling. This year, ACU Environmental Society plans to do the same during its first year as an established organization.
“It started out as something for 10 to 20 people,” Futrell said. “Now, we are seeing what kind of fun we can have.”
Dr. Jim Cooke, professor of environmental science and ACU Environmental Society adviser, said he is impressed with the group’s progression and its planning of events like the dorm recycle raid and the “Green Report.”
“It’s got a lot of potential, and it’s got some real committed students involved,” Cooke said.
ACU Environmental Society is an organization dedicated to “raising awareness and advocacy about environmental issues in the ACU community.” Members meet after Chapel every other Thursday in Zellner Hall, room 100. The next meeting will take place Nov. 16.
