Career center facilitates on-campus interviews

March 4, 2011 by Bailey Neal

Several businesses will conduct a series of interviews on campus with ACU students looking for jobs or internships. The companies will meet with students from varying majors throughout March.

Rachel Elam, office manager of the ACU Career Center, said on-campus interviews are a great opportunity to meet with potential employers face-to-face.

“It’s a recruitment of sorts. We are really just here to facilitate and act as the middle-man in getting employers here for students to talk with,” Elam said. “We want to encourage everyone that this isn’t just for certain students, but everyone should keep an eye out and get a CareerLink account, so you can know what’s going on and what jobs are being posted.”

On the heels of the Career Center’s career expo on Thursday, Elam said many of the companies coming to interview students will be different than those at the expo and will have a different process when looking for employees.

Daniel Orozco, associate director of the Career Center, said that while some employers who come to campus for interviews are alumni or also have come to speak to classes, employers come to ACU when looking for prospective employees for many other reasons as well. He says graduating seniors should expand their horizons when looking to interview for jobs.

“The economy has greatly impacted on campus recruiting, literally across the country. If you don’t have positions to fill, it doesn’t make sense to go to a college campus,” Orozco said. “Not everybody is going to find a good, related job to what they studied or what they would like to do.”

Orozco stresses that getting started early is his greatest tip for any college student who wants a job after graduation.

“To take something as an hourly job until something better comes along, well, we’d like you to think bigger than that,” Orozco said. “Have your documents in order, so as these companies start to post jobs, then you can take advantage of every opportunity.”

To attend an on-campus interview, students need to register through the Career Center’s website, which also lists interview dates and sign-up deadlines.
