Grease fire destroys ACU students’ kitchen

March 12, 2011 by Linda Bailey

A grease fire at 665 E. N. 21st St. engulfed the kitchen of three ACU students early Friday evening.

Multiple fire trucks lined the street to put out the fire of the house, occupied by Jordan Kahla, resident of the house, Austin Sumner, junior accounting major from Marshall, Seth Groveunder, senior finance major from Temple and Brandon Schmermund, junior psychology major from El Campo.

Everyone in the house, including the dog, made it out safely.

Kahla said the fire began after he and Sumner stepped outside while cooking dinner on the stove. When they came back in shortly after, Kahla said the stove was on fire and the flames reached to the ceiling.

Sumner grabbed the pan, and through it into the backyard. After the pan was removed, Kahla said the fire in the kitchen died down. Sumner called the fire department while Kahla said he closed the bedroom doors, grabbed the dog, Penny, and everyone went outside.

Groveunder was on his way home when he noticed fire trucks stopping in front of his house. He said besides the kitchen, not much else was damaged, but the whole house smells like smoke.

Terry Bowman, landlord of the house and director of Off-Campus Properties from ACU said the main concern was smoke damage to the furniture and walls, but he was more concerned with the residents.

“I’m just glad they’re all safe,” Bowman said.
