For a night, ACU students traded in their purple and white garb for boots and cowboy hats.
ACU’s annual rodeo gave students a chance to participate in unique western events. Four events were offered for women and four were offered for men.
The events were all considered intramural events, so social clubs were able to gain intramural points that count toward the overall standing. The men of Gamma Sigma Phi won the men’s events, while the women of Ko Jo kai won the women’s division.
Rodeo president Colton McInturff, sophomore animal sciences and pre-veterinary major from Franklin, Tenn., said the rodeo creates an opportunity for students to participate in non-traditional sports.
“It gives people a chance to get involved in something they don’t normally get to do,” McInturff said. “I mean, it’s every guys dream to get wrestle a steer.”
Even though he’s a Tennessean, McInturff said having a rodeo at a Texas university seems to make perfect sense.
“It’s sort of unique to ACU. There aren’t many colleges that have an intramural rodeo where the whole student body is eligible, not to mention that rodeo is the state sport of Texas,” McInturff said.
Women were eligible to compete in events involving goats, while the men’s events involved steers. McInturff said overall, the event was a success.
“This year went relatively smoothly compared to other years,” McInturff said. “I was happy with the participation, we had a lot of good help and no major mishaps.”
The pinnacle event in the women’s division was the queen event. In order to participate, contestants had to have competed in the other three events. Contestants had to rope and tie a goat as quickly as possible.
Ashley Simon, senior animal science major from Lockhart, participated in this year’s rodeo. She said the event was a chance to be with friends and participate in an activity she enjoys.
“I was never really a rodeo person, It was just never something I did,” Simon said. “But I love to be around animals so it was great.”
