Switchfoot, Anberlin to perform on campus

October 14, 2011 by Mark Smith

Switchfoot and Anberlin headline the October 23 concert in Moody Coliseum for the bands’ first appearance on ACU’s campus.

The show, also featuring Atomic Tom, will begin at 7 p.m. on the Sunday night of Fall Break. General admission tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Students receive a $5 discount with their student ID.

Switchfoot is promoting their eighth studio album, Vice Verses, released September 27. It debuted at No. 8 on The Billboard 200. Tracks from the record have been featured on ESPN’s College Game Day coverage, Hawaii Five-0 on CBS, and the upcoming Justin Timberlake movie, In Time. The San Diego-based band will perform their hit single “Dark Horses” on Conan on October 25.

Jake Hall, sophomore music education major from Springtown, said he’s more than excited to see one of his favorite bands in person.

“Switchfoot puts on a fantastic show. They’re even better live than their recorded music,” Hall said. “I have their new CD but I’m going to wait to hear it live at the concert before I listen to it.”

Switchfoot and Anberlin are wrapping up a month-long co-headlining tour with this concert in Moody Coliseum before Switchfoot heads overseas for a tour of Europe in support of “In Case Of Fire.”

This is expected to be Anberlin’s last concert before the Floridian band will begin recording their new album according to their tour press release.  Their fifth and most recent album, Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place, came out in September 2010.

Both bands blur the lines between modern and alternative rock. The genre isn’t necessarily classified as Christian rock, but the band members’ faith is evident in their music.

“I love that they can appeal to both Christian and secular listeners,” Hall said. “Jon Foreman [Switchfoot’s lead singer] is an extremely talented musician and songwriter who can speak to different people in different ways.”

Atomic Tom, an alternative/indie rock band, will open the show in promotion of their EP In Parallel released last month.

The New York band gained national attention last October with the video release of the band playing their single “Take Me Out” with just four iPhones on a New York City subway train. The YouTube video has been viewed more than 5 million times and landed them performances on television programs such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, E!News and Rachael Ray Show, among others.

The show at ACU was a late addition to the tour, announced earlier this month.

Trenton Carothers, sophomore actuarial science major from Early, said that he’s coming back to school early just for the concert.

“I was very excited when I found out both Switchfoot and Anberlin were going to be playing here,” Carothers said. “I’m even going to work a merchant table so I can be there longer. It’s going to be a great show.”
