Peyton Mosley took the reigns of the No. 20 Midwestern State Mustangs and lassoed them in any way she chose, leading the Wildcats to an extra inning 4-3 comeback win Friday in Wichita Falls.
The Wildcats (7-1) have now won seven straight following their opening day loss.
Mosley overcame a rocky start after surrendering two runs in the first inning before settling down over the next five. Actually, “settling down” would be an understatement. After the first inning, she only allowed two hits the rest of the game.
In the seventh inning, the Mustangs were in prime position to win the game after loading the bases with one out, but Mosley quickly silenced the threat with a pair of infield flies to send the game into extra innings.
Mosley showed her tenacity in the ninth inning as well, forcing Carey Campbell to fly out with the tying run at third base.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Wildcat offense came alive when catcher Erin Gilliland and designated hitter Courtney Flanary smoked consecutive RBI singles with one out. Gilliland’s single scored Lyndi Smith, while Flanary’s drove in Sarah Martinez to tie the game.
The score remained tied until the eighth inning when Kimberly Briggs hit a sacrifice fly that broke the tie. However, the Mustangs answered quickly due to an error by Martinez, who was covering first base on Mallory Mooney’s bunt attempt in the eighth. The Martinez error sent Elena Bennett home from second.
Despite the error, Mosley, a sophomore, remained cool, calm and collected, recording the next three outs in three up-three down fashion.
In the top of the ninth, the Wildcats scored in similar fashion. Martinez drove the ball deep enough into the outfield to score Ashley Nolan, who got to third base following a sacrifice bunt.
MSU pitcher Lyndsi Glenn took the loss, while Mosley (2-1) recorded the win. Glenn had a solid outing, too, though, as she threw nine innings and gave up four runs on six hits.
But the game belonged to Mosley, who gave up three runs on five hits to the Mustangs.
The Wildcats continue tournament play Saturday against Fort Hays State and Texas A&M-International, beginning at 11 a.m.
