“Women for ACU Scholarship Opportunity”

The Women for ACU organization is currently accepting scholarship applications for the 2012-2013 school year – men and women are eligible.
Thirty women founded the WACU in 1969, as an opportunity for women graduates, faculty, staff and others wanting to advance ACU. Throughout the years, they have remained active by funding a variety of campus enhancements and scholarships for students.
“The goal of the Women for ACU organization was to raise money for the university. They are known for having a pie table every year at Summit,” said Misty Spainhower, alumni relations officer.
Applicants must be of sophomore or junior standing with a 3.0 GPA. They must also be active on campus, participate in service work in the community and be active in a local church.
Applicants must include two letters of recommendation with their application, with one letter coming from an ACU faculty member and the other coming from a member of the applicant’s local church or community.
“We have 60-70 applicants every year. We can only choose about 10 recipients because we only have so much in our endowment to give away. It is such a hard decision because there are so many excellent candidates.” Donna Garrett, WACU national board vice president for funding and projects.
Scholarships up to $2,000 per fall and spring semester will be awarded, and may be renewed for the 2013-14 school year if the student remains in good standing and maintains a 3.0 GPA.
“The national board has an endowment from Women for ACU and we use that money to fund the scholarship,” Garrett said. “The scholarship has been around ever since Women for ACU was founded, 30 years ago. We wanted to be able to help students continue their education here at ACU. We raised the amount 3 years ago because the tuition was rising.”
