The ACU Police Department kicked off its semi-annual safety week at University Park on Monday night.

Officer Randy Motz was in the UP clubhouse, offering free engraving on mobile devices. The event was open-house, with students coming and going as they pleased.

Officer Motz said this is a service he likes to offer from time to time and that similar events are held throughout the year.

Theft is one of the biggest issues on the ACU campus, and engraving is one of the easiest ways for people to find a device’s owner. Of course, the best way to ward off theft is to keep rooms locked and to keep belongings nearby and within sight.

“If students want engraving, then this will help them if their device gets stolen,” said Officer Motz.

Pascal Lacoss, junior finance major from Surbiton, U.K., was pleased with his phone engraving.

“If my phone gets stolen it will help my recovery,” he said.

Melanie Kirkland, the marketing and sales director for University Park, organized the event. She explained that safety week occurs once a semester at UP, but that engraving had never been offered before.

Getting a device engraved usually involves shipping the device and paying as much as $80 for an elaborate design. Given ACU’s mobile learning initiative, it is not surprising that such a service would prove handy for many students.
