Spring break comes in the midst of officer elections for ACU social clubs. After spring break, every social club except for Alpha Kai Omega will announce new officers. Alpha Kai Omega follows the calendar year for officer elections, and finished their elections for the year in the fall.
Hollie Derrick, a junior advertising and public relations major from Monahans, has seen both sides of club. Derrick served as Madame Social, Alpha Kai Omega’s events coordinator, from Dec. 2011 to Dec. 2012.
Derrick appreciated the opportunity to pursue a passion for planning events through this position.
“Being Madame Social taught me how to successfully plan and work with others to make an event that is not only fun and relaxing but also as inexpensive as possible,” Derrick said.
The months since Derrick passed on her position has allowed her to see this year’s officer team in action.
“I can see how this year’s officers care about the girls they serve and how they are working at providing the best club experience for their sisters,” Derrick said.
Riley Thannum, sophomore elementary education major from Fort Worth, is currently running to be secretary of Sigma Theta Chi.
The officer team sets an example for the rest of campus what the values are of their club.
“Our officers are a wonderful representation of the women of Sigma Theta Chi and their example will definitely be modeled in the future officer teams,” Thannum said.
Thannum hopes to join the officer team to continue giving back.
“I want to be an officer because the women of Sigma Theta Chi have given so much to me that I want to give as much back to them as I can.”
Taking on the responsibility of being a club officer is not a small choice.
“Because I was an officer last year, I know that every decision and action that the officers make for club requires lots of their time and energy,” Derrick said.
New club officers will be announced in the weeks after spring break.
