SA officer endorsements: Benac for president

April 10, 2013 by Optimist Editorial Board

Dylan Benac is already experienced in the Students’ Association cabinet. After serving the past school year as vice president, he understands how the Congress runs.

But that’s only one reason why we’re endorsing him.

Benac is prepared. He has vision. He has plans.

If elected, Benac would be the only returning SA officer, which would be beneficial for the entire SA because he has learned firsthand what works well and what could be improved.

We like his plans for student petitions. We’ve seen them work: most recently in the rehiring of Mike Schuler, the Bean’s Piano Man, and in bringing back Dead Day. The university’s administration is willing to listen to students’ ideas about what changes they want to be made, and Benac plans to make this process easier. He wants the students to have a say in the university’s search for administrators in Student Life, who will have a great direct impact on campus life. Benac will strive to improve the relationship between the students and faculty and administration.

We are pleased to see more candidates for this important position. And while we don’t doubt that any of the three candidates can have success if elected, nor do we think any of them would have a perfect term, our choice is Dylan Benac for SA president.

Bo Braddock, senior biology major from Deer Park, is familiar with many students and areas around campus. We liked his idea of brainstorming with smaller groups within SA to better facilitate and encourage discussion. However, his track record in SA isn’t great. He hasn’t proven his responsibility. If elected, he needs to follow through and be accountable; with that, we believe he would be a good president of SA.

Aaron Johnson, junior art and psychology major from Houston, is comfortable in his walk with God and feels called to run for the position. However, he doesn’t have any experience in SA, but believes he will be able to learn and teach throughout the entire term. If elected, Johnson will face the challenges of inexperience and balancing leading SA and the lacrosse team.

The United Athletic Conference is officially taking the place of the Western Athletic Conference in the 2026-2027 athletic year. The UAC is a joint football effort between the WAC and the ASUN but will now extend to all sports. #acuoptimist #acuathletics #wac #uac

My second year at ACU was full of opportunities that grew me as an individual and a journalist.

In my first year as editor in chief of @acuoptimist, we published six print issues, filmed a 3-hour live election show, and revamped our newscast, all while producing news weekly.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
