The Service Action Leadership Team, SALT, is hosting a recycling event at the end of the semester. On Dead Day students will be able to donate unwanted belongings before heading home for summer.
The event will be held in the University Church parking from 10-3 p.m. Clothes, shoes, accessories, home dΓ©cor, appliances, furniture and more are accepted for donation.
This event is a conventional way for students to lessen their load without having to rent out a storage unit for things they don’t want, or wasting them by throwing everything away. Instead of struggling to fit things into trunks or trashcans, students can help benefit the community by recycling their left over items.
It is similar to the clothes swap that recently took place in Nelson Hall. Students can browse through the dropped-off items for something they’d like after donating at least one item themselves.
Shannon Kaczmarek, associate director of Residence Life and leader of the Nelson Hall clothes swap, said she likes the organization’s initiative to motivate students in giving back to the community.
“When students start packing up they realize they have a lot more than they intended to have,” Kaczmareck said. “They accumulate a lot over the course of the year- and so if they don’t want it, they want to get rid of it.”
In the past, the remaining donations were given to organizations such as the International Rescue Committee and Camp of the Hills. This year, the donations are going to be distributed to several different organizations.
Bob Strader, director for the Center of Christian Service and Leadership, is in charge of putting together the event. He believes this opportunity is a great way for ACU students to exercise their giving nature.
“ACU students are generous when they’re thoughtful, but often they’re not thoughtful- because they’re thinking about something else,” Strader said. “So if we’re thoughtful, we’ll do great.”
Coinciding with the recycling event, the organization is hosting a food drive to benefit some of the small food distributors throughout the summer. Social clubs and residence life will be helping operate this drive, encouraging students to donate food they never opened.
