College Republicans worth involvement

September 20, 2013 by Special Contributor

By Parker Gordon, senior political science and music major from Stephenville

Greetings. My name is Parker Gordon, president of the ACU College Republicans.

For some of you, that statement has alienated you from anything I will say further, but for the rest of you still reading, thank you.  As an officer for this club, I find that many people recognize and instantly brand me as a radical, gun-toting, redneck, “Prepper” who only watches FoxNews, supports evil banks and corporations and demonizes poor people. I receive quite a few unsavory reactions.

You don’t have to say anything; I can see it in your eyes and on your mouth as you say, “Oh.”

Don’t worry, I’m used to it.

I figure, as a senior, I can speak out a bit. What’s the worst that could happen, I’d get kicked out of school?  (Please don’t do that.)

Anyway, I want to tell you that the ACU College Republicans is an easy-going organization full of terrific people who aren’t crazy.  Come hang out with us. Our members are involved in many service organizations and volunteer their time to help people.  In fact, we even had members volunteering at the West Texas Fair. How cool is that?

We don’t let our conservative values affect who we are as Christians, rather, we channel our Christian values into how we can affect change in a broken world.  We simply want to be informed about the world around us. How else can we then seek to change hearts and minds?  If you might be interested in changing the world (or even just Abilene) with us, come to one of our super-fun events we have planned for this semester.

Go register to vote if you haven’t already.  That’s where it all starts.

Follow us on Twitter @ACUCollegeGOP and like our Facebook page (ACU College Republicans).  Thanks for reading.
