Miss Frontier Texas accepting applications

November 13, 2013 by Dystanie Douglas

The Miss Frontier Texas scholarship competition is now accepting applications for the 2014 Miss Frontier Texas. Frontier Texas museum hosts this local competition each year.

Brenna Jefferies, senior ad/PR major from Argyle, is the account director for the Frontier Texas public relations account.

“The Miss Frontier Texas competition is a way to get students involved at the Frontier Texas museum, to learn more about Texas history and to win a $3,000 scholarship,” Jefferies said.

According to the Miss Frontier website, the competition is not a typical pageant in which beautiful “pageant queens” grace the stage, but a competition that shows pageant queens are more than just beauty.

“It is a contest not based on appearance, but strictly your knowledge on Texas history and your ability to do things that they did on the frontier,” said Sara Bishop, sophomore animal science major from Longmont, Colo., who is the present Miss Frontier Texas.

Bishop said the idea of Miss Frontier Texas is to promote Texas history.

The applications to compete are due Nov. 26 and will begin in May.

“Once you have been accepted into the competition, Frontier Texas will send you an email with dates of when you take your test and when the different contests you have to participate in are,” said Bishop.

Various tests of knowledge and strength must be passed in order to win the Miss Frontier Texas competition.

“We had to take Texas history test, shoot a 50-caliber rifle, make a speech, saddle a horse, sew, clean clothes on a washboard, pitch our own tent, camp out and cook over a open fire,” said Bishop.

In addition to the $3,000 scholarship prize, a custom pair of Leddy boots, which are valued up to $1,500, and a Resistol cowboy hat, which is valued to $400, are awarded to the winning Miss Frontier Texas.

The Miss Frontier Texas competition is only open to female college students in Abilene.

Bishop said she encourages students to participate in the competition because it will allow them to learn a lot about Texas history and life on the frontier.

“It is a way to meet new, life-long friends, it’s a lot of fun and it is a great experience that you will never forget,” said Bishop.

My second year at ACU was full of opportunities that grew me as an individual and a journalist.

In my first year as editor in chief of @acuoptimist, we published six print issues, filmed a 3-hour live election show, and revamped our newscast, all while producing news weekly.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
