Pi Kappa will host the fifth annual Turkey Throwdown next weekend to raise money for Meals on Wheels.
Since being started by Delta Theta in 2009, the Turkey Throwdown has been a popular event on campus. The charity event to benefit Meals on Wheels is a 7-on-7 flag football tournament similar to the intramurals played on campus.
Robert Hull, a piano performance major from Ripon, Calif., is the current president of Pi Kappa.
“This will be our second year as hosts, and we are excited about the chance to continue the tradition and serve the Abilene community, which is very important to Pi Kappa.” Hull said.
Since 2012, Pi Kappa has taken over as the host of the Turkey Throwdown in hopes of keeping the tradition alive.
Hull expects the event to grow in participation from the 16 teams who signed up last year to around 20 teams in this years event.
“In addition to any ACU students and faculty, we have invited student organizations from McMurry and HSU,” he said.
The tournament will be double-elimination with both a men and women’s league. Regristration is $10 per player with a minimum of 8 players per team. Each person that registers will also receive a long sleeve shirt, with the two winning teams receiving special championship shirts.
“Some of the money is used to hire referees for the games, along with ordering the shirts for each player,” Hull said. “The Students’ Association also granted us money from their budget to help with the costs of referees and shirts, meaning that we have more money to send to charity.”
The Turkey Throwdown will take place at the Larry “Satch” Sanderds Intramural Field starting Nov. 21 and continue through the weekend. The tournament will end that Sunday, culminating with the championship games.
