New sports including Grime Games, bubble soccer and kayak races have been added to this year’s Wildcat Week intramurals as part of the improved previously-named Welcome Week for new students.
Kyle Pinson, director of intramural sports, said the Wildcat Week staff came up with the idea over the summer and decided to incorporate the new sports into the week’s activities.
Grime Games are a combination of the Mud Runner and the Nickelodeon Slime Games were at the old Elmer Gray Stadium Thursday night. Activities included jousting, slip ‘n slide kickball and a relay, said Wildcat Week Student Director Lane Luttrell.
“I believe that intramurals is a huge part of what makes ACU such a fun university,” said Luttrell, junior Bible major from Colleyville. “It’s a great way to meet people and get involved. I thought we could add this event to relieve some stress from the incoming freshmen as they prepare for their first year of college.”
Grime Games are likely to become part of Wildcat Week for a long time, Pinson said.
Bubble soccer was Wednesday in the Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center, while kayak races were in the SRWC lap pool on Thursday and Friday. The usual intramural sports were also available, like co-ed volleyball and flag football.
New students, including freshmen and transfer students, are invited to sign up for the fall semester sports on IMLeagues.com/ACU as a way to get connected to campus life. The entire fall semester intramural schedule can be viewed on the website as well.
“I think that freshmen should get involved in intramurals because it’s an awesome way to get your mind off of school and relieve some stress,” Luttrell said. “Having a rec and a champ league is an awesome way to have fun and a little competition with the respective leagues.”
