Alpha Chi sponsors its first blood drive

February 29, 2016 by Tori Aldana

Honor Society Alpha Chi will be sponsoring a blood drive in the campus center living room Wed. March 2 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Everyone who donates blood will receive a free T-shirt.

Every donation makes a difference and those who donate will be giving back to the Abilene community directly because the blood will go to 19 Abilene-area hospitals.

Alpha Chi president Tina Johnson said the society places an emphasis on community service, with their slogan, “scholarship through good.”

“Even though we are an academic organization, really want we want to do is make the world a better place through using our own natural talents,” said Johnson, senior biology major from Fairfax Station, Virginia.

While brainstorming what to do as an organization, members of Alpha Chi realized that past drives have been under-attended. An event like this coincides with many of both Abilene Christian University and Alpha Chi’s values.

“We’re getting our name out through the blood drive, but we’re also helping to put the emphasis on service,” Johnson said.

Johnson said ACU is a great place for the drive to occur as ACU, and Abilene as a whole, is a community driven place where people put others above themselves. Alpha Chi moved the location from the outskirts of ACU, such as near Zellner, to the heart of the campus, inside the campus center living room.

The event is not only for students, but faculty, staff or anyone in the Abilene community.

“I am excited to get the ACU community gathered around one cause,” Johnson said. “Giving blood is not bi-partisan, everyone should care about giving blood and helping their community.”
