AAUW offers scholarship for Big Country women

November 9, 2016 by Cole Widder

The Abilene branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is offering scholarships to women that are returning to the school to get their degrees or who are building upon their current degree. They are only offering this for the spring semesters.

They are looking for women that are residents of Abilene or in the surrounding counties such as Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Coke, Eastland, Fisher, Jones, Nolan, Runnels, Shackelford, Taylor and Throckmorton. Plus, they must be enrolled in one of the local colleges and universities in Abilene.

The AAUW in Abilene was established and organized in 1932. Until 2010, the organization only offered one graduate and three undergraduate scholarships to students at ACU, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University.  Now, the organization also offers scholarships to women attending Cisco College, Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing, Texas Tech School of Nursing and Texas Tech School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Hyunshun (Joy) Shin, the Local Educational Scholarship Chair, said, “For the past seven years, AAUW in Abilene has given more than 20 women AAUW scholarships including undergrads and grads (approximately $200,000) in Abilene”.

Previous winners have been very expressive of their gratitude in being one of the few to receive this scholarship. One of the last year’s recipients, Randa Tiner, has been more than thankful toward the AAUW for giving her a scholarship.

Tiner, a graduate student from Abilene, says, “I was actually blessed to have been given it twice.  As a graduate student, there are very few scholarships available. What makes this scholarship so great is that is specific for women and women who may be coming back to school after years of not attending to further their education.”

“I really don’t know what I would have done without the scholarship, because I was having to pay some out of pocket.  Financial aid does not cover everything, and worrying about how to pay your rent and provide food for your family is not something you want to have to worry about while you are trying to take care of school responsibilities.”

“I graduate in May, and I am always telling some of the older students I know about this amazing scholarship.  Very few even know it’s available. I only heard about it on the radio. It was exactly what I was looking for and praying that I would get some help.”

“There is little support in the way of graduate scholarships for those of us with families and other challenges. That is one thing that surprised me when I decided to go back. I thought being an older student with children would make it easier to receive financial help. I was very wrong about that. However, this scholarship sure helps a lot.”

But you must hurry. The deadline is Dec. 30, and they do not accept late submissions.
