The Wildcats hosted Howard Payne for its annual Christmas Slam celebration Saturday and out played the Yellow Jackets in a lopsided affair, winning 88-46.
The women posted 20 or more points in every quarter, and held Howard Payne to 15 or less, including a 25-6 fourth quarter.
Junior guard Sara Williamson played another impressive game scoring 25 points, while sophomore guard Dominique Golightly scored 16, along with four blocks and two steals.
Golightly said the crowd played a key role in the victory.
“The Christmas Slam atmosphere was the type of atmosphere we want to have for every home game,” Golightly said. “The more fans we have the louder it is and that really gets us going from the start of the game until the last seconds.”
After the win, the women improved to 4-3, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 3-5.
Up next for the women will be former Div. II foe, Midwestern State.
Heading into the game, the Mustangs are 6-2 so far this season. The last time both teams faced off was five seasons ago in the 2012-2013, when the Wildcats were in the Lone Star Conference with Midwestern, and defeated the Mustangs 85-72.
Senior forward Whitney Taylor currently leads the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points per game. As a team, Midwestern has averaged 66.5 points per game, and has allowed 62 per game to its opponents.
“We always want to clean up the errors we made in the last game, but continue moving forward,” Golightly said. “We are really focused on getting back on the winning track.”
The game is scheduled for Saturday in Abilene at 2 p.m. Coverage can also be heard on 98.1 FM.
