Wildcats set to compete in Georgia Tech tournament

August 23, 2018 by Lexi Kirgan

Volleyball will head to Atlanta Friday to participate in the Georgia Tech Hyatt Regency Invitational Tournament.

While ACU hasn’t played any official matches yet, the team did have a Purple White intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 17 with the White squad winning 3-1.

Returning juniors Marybeth Sandercox and Sofia Resendiz said they are looking forward to the upcoming tournament.

Sandercox, outside hitter/right side, said she was impressed by freshman setter Madison Rohre and said she is eager for the upcoming tournament based on how the Purple White game went.

“My goal for this weekend is for my team to perform against the other teams with how hard we have been working, hopefully winning the tournament,” Sandercox said.

Resendiz, libero/defensive specialist, said she was inspired going into the scrimmage because earlier that day she learned she had been put on scholarship by her coaches.

“I felt so grateful and full of joy because my teammates and coaches made me feel so loved after they announced I was put on scholarship,” Resendiz said. “Going into the game, I tried to not make that the focal point of the game, because it was about my team and me competing against one another and showing the fans what we’ve been working hard for this entire summer. I think being put on scholarship just gave me more motivation to work harder for my team on and off the court.”

Resendiz said being competitive and showing hard work and grit will be the key to succeeding in the tournament.

The Wildcats start the tournament against Georgetown at 8:30 a.m. Friday and will follow with a second match against Winthrop at 1 p.m. The team will then play the host, Georgia Tech, at 11 a.m. Saturday, which will also be shown on ACC network and will conclude the tournament against Idaho State at 3:30 p.m.
