The volleyball team will compete in the Southland Conference postseason tournament for the second year in a row this weekend.
ACU faces No. 5 Houston Baptist for the first round. The Wildcats went 1-1 with the Huskies this year, winning the first match 3-2 and losing the second 1-3. The Huskies finished 8-8 in conference, while the Wildcats finished 10-6.
Senior outside hitter Jacey Smith said she knows what the team has to do to come out with a win over HBU.
“It’s always a fight when we play HBU, so we’re looking forward to a really good match,” Smith said. “HBU sets their outsides a lot so we are really focused on our defense and, as always, our serve and pass game.”
Last year, the team made history by advancing to the tournament and making the championship game.
The Wildcats as an eighth seed upset No. 1 seed SFA in the first round and beat No. 4 seed HBU in the second round. They eventually lost to Central Arkansas in the championship match.
Junior libero Sofia Resendiz said the team wants nothing short of winning the final.
“I think we’ve been getting ready for this post season tournament since we played Corpus because we left hungrier than ever for a championship,” Resendiz said. “We told ourselves this weekend we want to play our best volleyball and get the result we want, a championship.”
In case of a win by ACU, the team would move on to play the winner of SFA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at noon.
The Wildcats will play their match against HBU Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
