Coming off a split series against SLU the Wildcats began their toughest week of the season. ACU came into this week 18-13. The team began the week by hosting University of Texas at Arlington Tuesday night.
“Offensively we got out in front early” said head coach Rick McCarty. “The guys responded really well every time they scored for the most part we scored. We then found a way to keep the lead.”
ACU took an early lead in the first inning with a score from grad transfer centerfielder Mike Brown. A home run by freshman left fielder Miller Ladusau allowed freshman second baseman Brett Hammit and junior right fielder Colton Eager to score. ACU held the lead up until the third inning.
UTA tied the score with four runs in the top of the third forcing ACU to respond with two runs scored by Eager and junior first baseman Hunter Gieser. ACU took the lead with the two runs in the bottom of the third leading 6-4 going into the fourth inning.
UTA and ACU went back and forth with the Mavericks tying up every run ACU scored up until the seventh inning. ACU scored two runs by Brown and junior shortstop/third baseman Alexei Cazarin. ACU led 11-8 against the Mavericks going into the eighth inning.
ACU ultimately won by holding UTA to just two more runs during the last two innings winning 11-10. Brown had a season high of three runs and six putouts scored in a game against UTA. Hammit had a season high for runs batted in with four in total.
ACU continues the week traveling to Austin to play a three game series against The University of Texas, the third top ranked baseball team in the nation. UT is currently 27-8 with one of those losses coming from Texas A&M. Earlier this season ACU defeated A&M 6-5 back in February.
The series can be watched on the Longhorn Network. The games are Friday April 16 at 6:30 pm, Saturday April 17 at 2:30 pm, and Sunday April 18 at 1 pm.
