Ko Jo Kai and Gamma Sigma Phi swept all four judging categories over the weekend to win this year’s Sing Song sorority and fraternity categories. The mixed class of sophomores and freshmen took the class act trophy.
Ethan Webb, senior Nursing Major from Abilene, directed the Gamma Sigma Phi act, “We are the Lorax, We speak for the TrEOS,” which won all of the categories alongside Ko Jo Kai’s act “Squawking on Sunshine” directed by Emily Lebaron, junior early childhood and elementary education major from Henderson, Nevada.
The Mixed class act, “The Founding Father Fairytale,” was directed by Ana McKinzie, freshman advertising and public relations major from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Mixed act won costume design and vocals.
“I have been working on this act since before October,” said Lebaron. “It’s just been so amazing to see it come together, all the things we’ve been working on. It just all came together so nicely on stage, and so it’s been a long process, but it was all so rewarding in the end.
For the Mixed act, this year was special because it marked the first time freshmen and sophomores were in the same act. McKinzie said this was both challenging and helpful because some of the acts had experience with Sing Song, and others had never heard of Sing Song until this year.
“We’re still freshmen, so we have no idea what Sing Song expects of us,” said McKinzie. “We had to polish some different choreo to make it more Sing Song-like, and that wouldn’t have been possible without our sophomores.”
Although Sing Song takes place in the Spring, the directors begin planning in October. Webb said his favorite part was seeing the way his act transformed over the year.
“It made me emotional,” Webb. “Just the way I envisioned it ever since I first started getting my plot points together and writing the lyrics and everything. Finally seeing that come to life felt really good.”
