Four students were chosen to be on the Lone Star Women’s Rugby Conference all-star team alongside 10 women from other Texas universities.

Overcoming competition between 30 women at tryouts, the four include:

Eunice Garza. Freshman kinesiology major from Brownsville.
Makenna Schulte. Sophomore marketing major from McKinney.
Bailey Albany. Sophomore management from Burleson.
Camilla Klar. Senior global studies major from Juda, WI.

Klar, the president of the women’s team, said despite playing for only one year, the achievement shows her commitment.

“Being on the all-star team shows that I’ve worked really hard for something that I care about,” Klar said. “Being a college student and only playing for a year, it means a lot. As a senior, who is about to graduate, I feel like I’ve done something as a college student.”

She also said one of the most important things is to recognize that not just one person made it from the ACU team, but four.

“With rugby you can’t just have a one star show, everyone has to be in it,” Klar said.

The women’s rugby team started last semester when Alexandria Soto wanted to know what she could do on her own, and what it was like to play on a team with women.

Since then, the team has grown to about 13 players, and participates in tournaments across the state against other Lone Star Conference universities including the University of North Texas, Oklahoma State University, Angelo State University and Stephen F. Austin State University.

The team offers open practices on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
