The Honors College is offering Colloquium Cruise as a short course in January.
The colloquium, Astronomy at Sea and in the Mayan Culture, is a one hour course available exclusively for Honors students.
The group will embark on a cruise internationally where they will share memories and learn about astronomy, the Mayan culture and the relationships between the two.
Two professors will be joining the group on the cruise: Dr. Rusty Towell and Daniel Garcia.
“The cruise’s first run [in January 2018] was popular enough that we wanted to offer it again,” said Sarah Winkler Laster, academic manager and budget director of the Honors college. “We are always trying to create new, fun ways for our Honors students to engage in experiential learning” said Lester.
Laster said the Honors college is proving a unique experience not available at many other universities.
“You can take a cruise, but does it usually have a formal educational component where you can get college credit? Probably not,” said Laster. “And, sure, you can take a course on astronomy or about the Mayan culture…but wouldn’t you rather do it on a cruise ship?”
Laster said she hopes that this will continue to be a very popular trip and tradition in the Honors college.
