Alumni Relations prepares for potential Homecoming rain

October 11, 2018 by Ashley Alfred

With high rain chances throughout the day Saturday, Alumni Relations is preparing to potentially resort to their plan B for Homecoming festivities.

Jama Cadle, assistant director of alumni relations, said the office is closely watching the weather and will not make any significant changes until the time of the events.

Plans for Friday have not yet been changed, however, in the case of significant rainfall, the carnival will be relocated to the SRWC and all food trucks will be outside of the building. Candlelight Devo will be moved to Chapel on the Hill, rather than the amphitheater and will no longer use candles.

“The weather is definitely playing a factor in our plans, but we always have a plan B,” said Cadle. “We’ve never had to cancel a parade and we hope to not have to cancel this weekend.”

In the case of rain or other severe weather, the arrival time of the parade floats will be pushed back. The Homecoming Parade will only be canceled if the rainfall is significant or there is local lightning.

Tori Timmons, senior management major from Lubbock and Tri Kappa Gamma president, said she is worried about the possibility of the cancelation of the Homecoming Parade.

“All of the Homecoming directors have poured a lot of time and effort into making [the parade] happen and the pledges have been working so hard to perfect their routines,” Timmons said. “I want them to be able to display what they have been working so hard on.”

All reunion tailgates have been moved inside. Classes celebrating their 35th year will be in the lobby of the Halbert-Walling Research Center, 40th and 45th reunions will be in the lobby of the Onstead Science Center and the Golden Anniversary reunion will be in the Hunter Welcome Center.

Departments and Organizations should still plan on their tailgates occurring in the campus mall unless a notification is received from Jennifer Ellison, Mandy Collum or Craig Fisher.

The post-game firework show will begin at 9:25 p.m., unless there is local lightning.

“The primary purpose of Homecoming is to provide opportunities for alumni and students to come together and reconnect,” said Cadle. “Rain or shine, that will happen.”
