The Student Government Association hosted a Super Bowl party on Sunday in the basement of the Campus Center.
SGA provided pizza and drinks to attendees who joined to watch the game.
Mikaela Clinton, junior advertising and public relations major from San Antonio, said the event was primarily for students who lived on campus and don’t have access to a TV in their dorm rooms.
“Though there are lobbies in the dorms, many of the students don’t have as easy access to a place to watch the Super Bowl and hang out with their friends,” Clintons said. “We wanted to give them an avenue to watch the game, eat pizza and have that experience that a lot of people have at their homes.”
Clinton said that because the event was primarily for underclassmen, the freshman class officers decided on a budget.
“Residence Life helped by providing money for drinks and things like that, we already had the large screen, and by hosting it in the Campus Center, there was already furniture,” Clinton said. “So there really wasn’t a whole lot of tasks to get figured ahead of time, we just used some of the resources we had.”
Clinton said SGA decides on events based on the needs and requests of the student body.
“We try to do whatever students want to do,” Clint0n said. “We are kind of the voice for students, so typically events come from our class officers, liaisons or people within Congress speaking on behalf of their constituents.
Clinton said events range from Freshman Formal to a movie night around Christmas time, with a purpose of elevating the student experience.
Clinton said proposed events come through in the form of legislation in which a member of congress writes a bill proposing an event with budget allocations and what all is necessary for the event to be executed. Once the bill is ready, the member will present the idea and the rest of Congress will vote. If passed, the money will be allocated and the event planning will be underway.
Clinton said SGA has several more events planned throughout the Spring semester and will be working with the Cabinet on multiple events.
